How to Change Your Last Name After Marriage in Indiana

After you say “I do,” the legal steps to change your last name can feel overwhelming — but we’re here to make it easy.

Here’s what you’ll need to do to update your last name with confidence:

✅ Step 1: Get Your Certified Marriage License

After your wedding, your officiant will return your signed marriage license to the county clerk.
Within a few days, you’ll be able to order a certified copy, which you’ll need to update your name with government agencies and other institutions.

Or I give you the option to return your marriage license in person to the clerks within 30 days after your wedding to obtain your certified copy that same day.

✅ Step 2: Notify Government Agencies

Start with your Social Security card and Driver’s License.
You’ll typically need:

  • Your certified marriage license

  • other legal documents required by that particular agency

✅ Step 3: Update Your Name Everywhere Else

Use our free downloadable template to make this step easier:

  • You will receive a free template and checklist after your wedding or elopement with Indy Get Married.

  • This is a very beneficial resource to make your name-changing process easier.

💬 Pro Tip: It’s a good idea to make multiple certified copies of your marriage license so you can send them to multiple places at once.
