Wedding Vows in Indianapolis: How to Write, Say, and Personalize Your Vows

Wedding vows are the emotional heartbeat of your ceremony. Whether you’re standing by the canal, in a cozy chapel, or barefoot in your backyard — what you say to each other matters.

As an officiant who’s helped hundreds of couples all over Indiana, I can tell you this:
There’s no one right way to write or say your vows.

But there is a way to make them feel real, personal, and unforgettable.

Here’s how.

Should You Write Your Own Vows?

Short answer: If it feels right, go for it.

Writing your own vows gives you the freedom to speak from the heart.

You can talk about how you met, how they make you feel, what you’ve been through, and what you promise moving forward.

Not a writer? Don’t worry — heartfelt doesn’t have to mean perfect.

And if it makes you too nervous, we can include personal vows privately before the ceremony or blend them into a script I help you create.

Vow Tips from a Local Officiant

Here are a few things I tell all my couples:

  • Speak from the heart, not Pinterest. Use your own voice, not a quote unless it really resonates.

  • Keep it short and sincere. 1–2 minutes is the sweet spot.

  • Use stories. The little moments (“you always make my coffee just right”) hit deeper than poetic lines.

  • Practice out loud. You don’t need to memorize — but read it a few times before the big day.

  • Print or write them down. I’ve seen phones die, hands shake — a simple card is your best friend.

Do You Have to Say Vows in Front of Everyone?

Nope! You can:

  • Write private vows and read them before or after the ceremony

  • Share personal vows with just your partner, and do simple “I Do’s” during the public portion

  • Ask me (your officiant 😉) to read your words for you if you’re nervous

Your ceremony should reflect who you are — and if that means keeping some feelings private, we support that 100%.

📄 Don’t Want to Write Your Own?

Totally fine! I can include traditional or customized vows in your ceremony script.

Many of my couples prefer to keep things simple and let me guide the moment with something heartfelt and timeless.
